Brian Sousa, "Almost Gone" - for May 10

Choose two of four:

1. Reflect on the polyssemy of the nvel's title and how apt it is for the story/stories

2. Do you like the first person narrator Scott? Why (not)?

3. How do you react to the structure of the text? Do you think there is any content to this particular form (of polyphony, of the sthort story cycle)?

4. Comment on scenes/speech(es) illutrative of the different characters' attitudes towards religion.

    2. I do like Scott, because I think it's a fresh take on that type of character. Instead of having the view of other people judging his actions and version of the story, we have him as our narrator, as a man who is in a battle with himself for sanity. His relationship with Emily is amazing to read, even if we don't get to see much of how it was before she died. Truly, Scott's part of the short story cycle is what made me love the story. His storytelling is very touching, and we can feel the conflict going on inside his mind. I'd dare say it's relatable, minus the copious number of drugs he's on.

2- I do like Scott as a narrator. "Fortaleza" is a bit confusing, but I feel like just the way he is makes people dive into the story more easily. We see that he is not perfect, he actually tells us that he has a lot of flaws and tells us all about the dubious things he's doing, and I believe that that gives us, readers, the sense that it's more real. That he's a real person. We can also see the grieve he feels, and his love for his daughter, and that's what made me love him the most. The last chapter is my absolue favorite, the way Scott describes the way he tried to make Emily happy, and then how hard he tried to save her. We experience evrything in first hand with him, even the crazy life he lives in Brazil.
